Peacock studio member and former Peacock printmaker Charlie Hynes has had a long history with Peacock dating back to the early 1990's when he was strongly involved in screenprinting side of the Ralph Steadman residency. Ralph is just one of the many artists Charlie helped edition works by during his time on the team.
"All art to some of lesser extent autobiographical as all artists, either directly of through metaphor and extend their own experience, this is often particularly apparent when the artists children reach a certain age as their imaginative preoccupations tend to dominate all around them. Charlie Hynes's response to this syndrome has been to reinterpret through various mediums a series of stories.
What has resulted is a beautiful series of screenprints which exemplify the essential contradictions of Myths and fairy tales, they at the same time are endearing and sinister, comic and tragic, light and very dark. The drawings are precise, clear, honed down and the images are so well constructed that within their apparent simplicity their exists a wealth of incident, expression and narrative. There is never an extraneous detail an unnecessary object, or paw out of place.
Will MacLean referring to an earlier series of prints by Charlie noted their place in a tradition leading from Hogarth through Cruickshank and Cynicus to Bawden.
