There are many monuments to granite throughout the world and here in Aberdeen we are surrounded. We regard this weighty stone through its built form, however in John Mclean’s ‘Granite Suite’ we witness a master colourist at the height of his powers, pay homage to its presence. On the occasion of McLean’s 1988 debut at the Francis Graham – Dixon Gallery, Tim Hilton of the Guardian writes “Surely there is no other British artist with a comparable desire to produce paintings of sheer and utter beauty?”
In the Granite Suite we can experience this beauty through all McLean’s subtleties; complex mediums are made simple, coupled with the coolest of palettes – masterpieces of the printed form.
