Peacock studio member Carla Smith's work is inspired by the vast, beautiful complexity of being alive. Carla believes play is crucial and something that should be extended beyond childhood. Her current focus of making is centred around food. Exploring the social narratives and nuanced landscape that meals allow for, her work embodies the tender, celebratory moments that can be shared by the act of having a meal. Her practice encourages audience interaction through multisensory experiences, such as allowing the audience to consume, touch and physically be a part of the artwork.
Counting Sheep is an artwork inspired by childhood memories of staring at tiles in the bathroom of my grandparents' house. Capturing the imagination of youth, the print features a group of floating sheep.
Like searching for animals in passing clouds on sunny days, these sheep appeared to me, floating within the delicate, swirling pattern of those tiles. Acting as a tribute to the magic and innocence of childhood, this piece invites you to recall your own fond memories, and encourages you to let your mind wander and drift off into peaceful slumber, just as you might while counting sheep.
