Marie Velardi was born in Geneva, Switzerland. She lives and works in Geneva and Paris. Her work has been exhibited in France, Germany, Belgium and Italy. In 2014-2015 she represented Switzerland at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in India. She has won various awards; among them the ‘2015 Scholarship of the City of Geneva’ for her on-going research project called Terre-Mer.
'Coastal Realignment 1872-1950-2003 (RSPB, Nigg Bay Nature Reserve)' is a screenprint. The three layers of blue represent three different moments in time and the movements of the coastal line. The pale blue is the present moment of Nigg Bay Nature Reserve on the Cromarty Firth, where in 2003 the sea walls were breached to allow the sea to come back in. As opposed to building higher walls to gain more land and security, the artist is interested in this project as a new way of developing other conditions of living with the sea. The 2 other layers correspond to the other dates in the title: the darker blue and first layer is the coastline in 1872, and the other is from 1950.
