James Furneaux (1935 - 2013) was noted for painting Aberdeen’s lesser known buildings and backstreets and the city’s landmarks from unusual perspectives. He was renowned for working on his watercolours and pen and ink drawings in situ and this has led Furneaux to many an interesting encounter with passers by, some curious, some suspicious and some even hostile.
Furneaux was also an accomplished printmaker and, throughout the years, produced many etchings and screenprints of his paintings at Peacock. His early training in architecture is apparent in his depiction of the city’s buildings, many of which are no longer standing.
