Realised when Davidge was a graduating Printmaking student at Gray’s School of Art, and featuring in her degree show, Sequence is a meditative yet playful enquiry into the nature of mark-making, looking closely at the moment when a mark becomes a sign. The marks on the print can be seen as the letters, or sounds, of a visual language built out of their composition. By themselves, they do not hold meaning. It is only in their arrangement that they build a complex, organic architecture of the page, through the different textures and signs they represent. Exploring a variety of mark-making techniques within lithography, the work also refers to lithography as a process by inserting a small ceramic piece on it, visible on the centre-left side of it, reminiscent of a lithographic stone.
