Alan Johnston is an Edinburgh-based artist who has exhibited widely in Europe, the USA and Japan. His large-scale, delicate drawings are made of short, irregular pencil marks, which combine to depict impressions of geometric spaces, suggestive of windows or mirrors.
Johnston is interested in the ways that spatial depth is experienced and marked out, and conveys a particular attention to the borders of the visible by revealing the details of walls, proportions of spaces and other features in the built environment.
