"Initially I was thinking about creating this piece in much the same way as I made my Joan Crawford alphabet; painting directly on to canvas but I wanted this to be less broad and more detailed. I thought about preparing sections on tracing paper and applying them piece by piece as I did with the mural work for Shrimpy's restaurant in London, and then I remembered the large screen beds at Peacock (where I had been working for several years) and the idea of screen printing the whole thing in sections arrived.
I realised that if I were to come up with an attractive print version I would be able to generate funds for both the National Portrait Gallery and Peacock Visual Arts, which is what I have done. I am also pleased that there is something in the On The Wall show that was hand made in Scotland."
